Bachelet Meets Wang Yi Ahead of UN Leadership Vote

(MENAFN) UN secretary-general candidate Michelle Bachelet met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Thursday, just months before the selection process for the world body’s top position.
"China will take part in the selection of the next UN secretary-general in a responsible and constructive manner, and will work to promote the UN to revitalize its authority and vitality, and to better adapt to the new situations and better address new challenges," Wang stated, according to a release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Bachelet described the United Nations as "an indispensable platform" for tackling global challenges, stressing the need for stronger multilateralism and reforms that restore the organization’s founding mission.

In remarks delivered on May 26, Wang outlined the qualities expected of the next UN chief: firm commitment to the UN Charter, strong diplomatic and coordination skills, fairness on major international issues, support for developing nations, and advancing institutional reform.

The process of choosing the next UN secretary-general began in November last year. Bachelet, one of five contenders, previously served as Chile’s president from 2006 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2018. She also held the post of UN high commissioner for human rights between 2018 and 2022.

The election to select the UN’s 10th secretary-general will take place later this year, with the winner assuming office on January 1.
