Trump Urges Congress to Extend Key US Surveillance Authority
According to reports, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Section 702 is essential for national security and military operations.
He stated, “FISA 702 is very important to our Military, and keeping the American People safe, especially during the World Cup and America250 Celebrations. If nothing is done, this important Law will expire this week.”
Section 702 of FISA allows US authorities to collect communications of foreign nationals located outside the United States without requiring individual warrants, and is overseen by the Director of National Intelligence.
Trump also said that acting Director of National Intelligence William Pulte is expected to assume his role on June 19 and will begin implementing what he described as an “immediate and needed” downsizing of the intelligence office, shifting personnel back to their original agencies.
However, Democratic lawmakers are reportedly withholding support for renewing the surveillance program while Pulte remains in the position, citing concerns over his proximity to the president and his limited experience in national security matters.
