Unrest in Belfast Sparks Police Crackdown

(MENAFN) A second consecutive night of far-right disturbances in Northern Ireland has left twelve police officers wounded and resulted in sixteen arrests. The turmoil was triggered by a severe knife assault in Belfast, intensifying tensions across the region.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson explained that authorities had observed extensive organization of the disorder through social media, both within and beyond Northern Ireland.

Addressing those responsible, he declared, "We will bring you to justice," emphasizing that "That toxicity is what's bringing people out onto the streets and it needs to stop."

Law enforcement clarified that there was no current proof linking the violence to loyalist paramilitary groups. However, Henderson stressed that if such involvement were uncovered, "we will not be shy to investigate." He noted that officers were vigilantly tracking online activity and pledged to act against anyone found violating the law.

Directing his remarks at major platforms, Henderson stated, "I want to say directly to the big social media companies, if you're hosting material content on your sites that is encouraging disorder, that needs to stop."

Authorities cautioned that water cannons would once again be deployed Thursday evening, supported by additional officers and specially trained dogs for public order. Henderson also confirmed that patrols around hospitals would be strengthened to reassure medical staff. Warning of the risks for those participating in the unrest, he concluded that the stakes were "very high."
