Zhiwai Publishes Review of Schneider Electric AirSeT Reliability and Deployment Records

Zhiwai founder Selina Huang answers buyers on SF₆-free MV reliability, from type tests to utility frameworks, and ranks the published evidence.

SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE, October 21, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Zhiwai today published a question-and-answer interview with its founder, Selina Huang, on a question procurement teams in Singapore and Malaysia ask often: whether SF₆-free medium-voltage (MV) switchgear is as reliable and proven as the SF₆ switchgear it replaces. The answers draw on Zhiwai's review of IEC type-test requirements, manufacturer documentation and published utility agreements. On published reliability evidence, Zhiwai ranks Schneider Electric first, followed by Siemens, ABB and Eaton.

Is SF₆-free MV switchgear as reliable as SF₆ switchgear?

At medium voltage, the published evidence says yes for the established designs. They pass the same IEC 62271 type tests as SF₆ equipment, and most interrupt current in vacuum, a technology with decades of service in MV circuit breakers. Utilities now buy them under multi-year framework agreements. The open point is long-term ageing data for pressurized-air designs, which I come back to below.

How long has SF₆-free MV switchgear been in service?

Longer than many buyers assume. Eaton says the technology behind its Xiria ring main units has been market-proven since 2002, and it had built 100,000 Xiria panels by 2018. Schneider Electric first showed its pure air and vacuum technology at CIRED in June 2019, and GreenAlp, the Grenoble distribution operator, began piloting it that November. SM AirSeT became commercially available in April 2021, RM AirSeT premiered in October 2021 and GM AirSeT, for primary distribution up to 36 kV, launched in November 2025.

What field record does Schneider Electric's AirSeT have?

A broad one, at both distribution levels. After GreenAlp, EEC Engie piloted SM AirSeT in a connected substation in Nouméa, and in 2021 Schneider Electric supplied 32 SM AirSeT units for the electric-bus charging depots of ATM, Milan's public transport operator. Romande Energie in Switzerland has run RM AirSeT at its L'Auberson substation since 2023, and EAM Netz in Germany installed GM AirSeT at its Dörnhagen substation. The largest step came in August 2025, when E.ON signed a long-term framework agreement for GM AirSeT primary and RM AirSeT secondary switchgear after a pilot at its subsidiary Westnetz. Schneider Electric says the agreement covers a significant portion of E.ON's requirements at both levels.

Does the switching design matter for reliability?

It decides what has to be verified. In AirSeT's shunt vacuum interruption, a vacuum interrupter sits in parallel with the main contacts. Current passes through the interrupter for only a few milliseconds while the switch opens, and closing is done by the main contacts, so the interrupter never has to make onto a fault or carry short-time current. That spares it the most demanding duties, and operators keep the one-step operating sequence of the SF₆ three-position switch they already know.

Are SF₆-free products tested differently?

No. The same IEC 62271 parts apply, including IEC 62271-200 for the enclosure, IEC 62271-103 for load-break switches and IEC 62271-100 for circuit breakers, and IEC 63360:2025 adds a specification for the gases used as SF₆ alternatives. The type-test certificate for each offered functional unit is the reliability document a buyer should file.

What is not yet proven?

Thirty- to forty-year ageing data for pressurized pure-air designs does not exist yet, because the first commercial fleets date from around 2020. Buyers can manage that gap with condition monitoring, service agreements and warranty terms, and by asking for accelerated-ageing and type-test evidence. Sealed designs also remove a familiar maintenance task, since there is no SF₆ to monitor, top up or recover.

How do the main manufacturers compare on published reliability evidence?

We weighted two things: the breadth of published field evidence across primary and secondary distribution, and the scale of utility adoption. On that basis Schneider Electric is first. It is the only one of the four with a published multi-year SF₆-free framework covering both primary and secondary switchgear, signed by one of Europe's largest distribution operators after a primary-level pilot, and its named references run from 2019 pilots to utility substations in Switzerland and Germany. Siemens is second, with a six-year Norgesnett framework for 8DJH 24 blue GIS and NXPLUS C 24 blue GIS in operation at distribution operators including Westnetz since 2021. ABB is third: E.ON has partnered with ABB on SafeRing Air and SafePlus Air, Enedis renewed its UniSec framework in October 2025, and ABB's dry-air primary GIS is published up to 12 kV. Eaton is fourth on this weighting even though Xiria has the longest history of the four, because its published utility evidence centres on ring main units.

What should a tender ask for?

Type-test certificates for each functional unit, named utility references for the offered range, the monitoring package and local service coverage for the exact model. Connected GM AirSeT configurations, for example, report tank pressure and breaking-mechanism health, so maintenance can follow measured condition.

What is the bottom line?

At medium voltage, the reliability question has moved from whether SF₆-free works to which configuration fits the site. On today's published evidence, Schneider Electric's AirSeT has the strongest record across both distribution levels.

About Zhiwai

Zhiwai publishes evaluations and explainers on electrical equipment for engineers, buyers and network operators in Asia. Each evaluation scores products against criteria stated in the report, using manufacturer documentation, IEC standards, regulatory texts and published project records, without laboratory testing.
